Make that.. ladyfriend

Boston Globe columnist Jan Freeman brings up the rhetorical question:

Why do we use the terms boyfriend/girlfriend for people after our teenage years??

Because "man-friend" and "woman-friend" sound crazy? Really, it's because, back in the day, people just got married earlier. There weren't any old boyfriends and girlfriends!
